Developing A Policy Agenda

In order to influence public policy, every advocacy effort needs a clear agenda and focus on specific goals. Although many issues potentially can be included in an asset policy agenda, state coalitions have traditionally limited their focus to three or four policies per legislative session in order to keep stakeholders and legislators engaged.

Moreover, a policy agenda must be based on an understanding of your community’s needs and your state’s political climate. For new or emerging coalitions, for example, the most effective strategy could be an initial focus on highly visible asset preservation issues, such as predatory lending.
