Comment Letters

Comment letters on proposed or existing regulations can enable your coalition to bring your expertise to the rulemaking process. Typically, many laws passed by Congress or state legislatures direct regulatory agencies to adopt regulations on the implementation and enforcement of such laws. Although the authorizing law provides an overview of the regulation’s scope, the specific details are often left to the regulatory agencies to decide. In many instances, the public is often given a specific amount of time to comment on the proposed regulations.
Through comment letters, coalitions and advocates can provide their expertise to help ensure that proposed or existing regulations will benefit constituents and affected populations. Comment letters can include comments on whether the regulation truly fits within the guidelines of the legislation, estimates of the impact of the law on constituents, and suggested changes.
